Europe is experiencing a dramatic weather divide this week, with southern countries baking under extreme heat while central and eastern regions brace for powerful thunderstorms, hail, and flash flooding.

Italy's Ministry of Health has activated its daily heatwave warning system across 27 cities, advising residents and tourists to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Temperatures in Rome are expected to climb to 39°C in the coming days. Earlier this week, Italy issued high wildfire alerts across parts of Sardinia and Sicily as hot, dry weather raises the risk of fast-spreading fires.

Meanwhile, Spain's Ministry of Health has issued heatwave alerts for Andalusia and the Balearic Islands beginning Saturday, July 18. Forecasters warn temperatures could soar to 44°C, particularly in southern Spain, prompting concerns for vulnerable groups and travelers during the peak holiday season.

Poland is also under an orange heat alert, with daytime highs forecast to reach between 30°C and 32°C through Friday.

But while southern Europe swelters, other parts of the continent are preparing for severe storms.

Germany's national weather service, the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), has issued multiple Level 2 thunderstorm warnings, citing risks including lightning, hail, localized flooding, and wind gusts of up to 90 km/h in some areas.

Romania's National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has also issued a moderate thunderstorm warning. Beginning at 12:00 p.m. local time, periods of atmospheric instability are expected to bring torrential rain, frequent lightning, strong winds, and small to medium-sized hail measuring between 1 and 3 centimeters in diameter.

Romanian forecasters said wind gusts could reach 50 to 70 km/h, while rainfall totals may reach 15 to 25 liters per square meter within one to three hours, with isolated areas receiving more than 30 to 50 liters.

The weather contrast is not limited to Europe. Across the Atlantic, Washington, D.C., has issued a heat advisory for an approaching heatwave, while New York City has warned residents of a combination of dangerous heat and poor air quality that officials say could pose a significant public health risk.

With one half of Europe battling scorching temperatures and the other facing thunderstorms and hail, meteorologists are urging residents and travelers alike to closely monitor local forecasts as an exceptionally volatile summer pattern continues across the Northern Hemisphere.
