Port of Souda, Chania. Photo: Studio MDF / Shutterstock.com Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias has ordered a Preliminary Administrative Inquiry following the collision of two ships at the Port of Souda in Crete.
Dramatic footage circulating online showed the two vessels colliding, with a ferry seen striking a cargo ship’s port side while attempting to dock.
In a statement shared on social media, Kikilias said he had instructed the Chief of the Hellenic Coast Guard to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The minister also announced that the Deputy Chief of the Coast Guard is traveling to Chania as authorities prepare a case file and move forward with the appropriate administrative sanctions.
“On security matters, there is absolutely no tolerance whatsoever,” Kikilias said, emphasizing the government's commitment to maritime safety and accountability.
The Port of Souda, located near Chania on the island of Crete, is one of Greece's most important ports, serving both commercial and passenger traffic.
