The testimony of content creator Sarina Walsh, who shared footage from the dramatic event that occurred in June and had remained under the radar, caused an uproar, bringing immediate attention from Italian Member of Parliament, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who today launched a fierce attack on the site's safety protocols.
The public uproar gained official political traction when Borrelli posted a stark warning on his Facebook page, declaring that the current situation has crossed every possible line.
Borrelli clarified that his political movement has long warned against the unregulated, careless, and dangerous management by local boat operators responsible for bringing tourists into the Blue Grotto. The MP accused the authorities of indifference, earnestly writing that the entire system is probably waiting for a fatal disaster to wake up and implement real reforms, reminding that just days ago, another violent brawl erupted at sea between boat operators at the site.
Borrelli's official report reveals chilling details from the testimony of a 49-year-old American tourist who recounted the terrifying moments inside the cave.
According to her, immediately after the boat hit the top of the rock severely and began filling with seawater, the local operator attempted to continue the tour as if nothing happened, rowing and singing while the passengers were soaked and shaking with fear. The confusion and anxiety peaked when other guides in the cave started shouting instructions in Italian, incomprehensible to the tourists, causing some passengers to cry, fearing they would be trapped in the dark, in what they described as minutes that felt like an eternity.
Despite the severity of the claims emerging from today's viral publication, it is important to note that the incident ended without loss of life thanks to the resourcefulness of another local boatman who noticed the distress, brought his boat closer, and instructed the passengers to board quickly, moments before their vessel fully sank.
MP Borrelli concludes by stating that this quick rescue does not lessen the severity of the situation, and the exposure of this footage must lead to strict penalties and oversight against operators who take unnecessary risks with visitors.
However, enforcement and tourism authorities emphasize that this was an unusual incident. Boating routines in Capri continue under heightened alertness, and the picturesque site remains open and inviting to tourists worldwide who enjoy its beauty safely and with full adherence to required safety regulations.
