In a post shared on social media, Lagarde said Europeans have been discussing their preferred themes and designs "around dinner tables, in chat groups and online," highlighting the strong public interest in one of the European Union's most recognizable symbols.

The consultation invites citizens to express their views on potential themes for future euro banknotes. The ECB has been exploring several concepts as part of a multi-year redesign process aimed at ensuring euro notes remain relevant, secure, and reflective of Europe's shared identity.
The redesign initiative marks the first major update to euro banknotes in more than two decades. While existing euro notes will remain legal tender, the new series is expected to incorporate enhanced security features alongside imagery intended to resonate with Europeans across the continent.
The ECB launched the consultation to give citizens a direct role in the process, with feedback helping guide the final selection of themes and designs. According to Lagarde, participation has already surpassed six million responses, underscoring widespread engagement with the project.
Europeans who have not yet taken part in the consultation can still submit their views through the ECB's official survey platform.
The final designs have not yet been selected, and the introduction of any new banknotes is expected to take several years. However, the strong public response suggests that the future appearance of the euro is a subject that continues to capture the imagination of people across Europe.
