A subtropical ridge originating in North Africa is taking hold over the country and is expected to bring a sharp rise in temperatures and heavy heat loads, precisely at the beginning of the main holiday season for Italians.
Millions of tourists visiting Italy are expected to face challenging weather conditions. Major tourist sites, including the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and major city attractions, are expected to be particularly busy as the heatwave continues. At the same time, the Italian Ministry of Health has raised the alert level in several cities, some of which are already under a red heat alert.
According to the Italian Air Force's meteorological service, the hottest areas will be Sicily, southern Italy and parts of the center of the country. In Sicily, temperatures could reach 45 degrees Celsius, while in Rome, Florence and other cities in the center of the country, temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius or even higher are expected.
Heavy heat loads are also expected in northern Italy, especially in the Po Valley, while in coastal cities, including Naples, the high humidity is expected to increase the feeling of heat beyond the measured temperature.
Alongside the heat wave, forecasters are warning of a sharp change in the weather in the north of the country. The intrusion of cooler air from northern Europe, combined with the warm air from the south, could cause the development of localized thunderstorms, hail, strong gusts of wind, and heavy rain in the coming days.
Travelers to Italy are advised to plan activities and tours for the early morning or evening hours, drink plenty of water, use sun protection, and avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest hours of the day. It is also recommended to regularly update yourself with the official forecasts and warnings of the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service, Civil Protection, and the Italian Ministry of Health.
