Security authorities in the United States, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the FBI, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Department of Defense (DoD), issued a joint statement in response to numerous reports about the thousands of drones observed in the U.S. in recent weeks.
As of today, the FAA notes, there are legally registered over one million drones in the United States under the Federal Aviation Administration or FAA.
Thousands of commercial, amateur, and law enforcement drones operate in the skies every day, and their numbers are expected to grow with technological advancements.
"In the past weeks, the FBI received over 5,000 reports of drone sightings, from which about 100 investigative leads were developed. The federal authorities, in coordination with local law enforcement agencies, are working to investigate the reports. Teams equipped with advanced detection technology and skilled observers have been sent to relevant areas.
Preliminary Findings
After a thorough examination of the technical data and public reports, it was found that most sightings involved commercial and amateur drones, law enforcement drones, and manned aircraft such as planes and helicopters. The FAA notes: "A small number of drone sightings have been reported over military installations in New Jersey and other areas, including restricted airspace. Although such sightings are not new, the Department of Defense takes the matter very seriously.
