Smoke from wildfires in the sky over Greece. Photo: Amit Cotler Wildfires continue in Greece. This morning (August 3, 2026), Greece's emergency centers reported a new fire that broke out in the Agia Skepi area near Patras, an area that is today becoming the main focus of the fires.
Additional significant fires are also raging nearby this morning, in the Corinthia region of Attica. Several communities in the area have been evacuated, but there is no concern at this stage about the fire spreading to tourist areas.
Last night, residents reported smoke visible for miles, including in the Athens Riviera area. Some reports also spoke of the smell of the fires reaching far away
During yesterday's firefighting efforts, and apparently due to thick smoke obscuring visibility, two Bell firefighting helicopters collided in mid-air during an operational activity. Two pilots of one helicopter were killed, and the pilots of the other helicopter were injured.
Meanwhile, the fires in Crete are weakening. Despite a fire still burning in the southern Rethymno prefecture, there is no danger of another flare-up at this stage.
