Rome. Photo: Shutterstock Rome halts all tram lines. This week, Rome has suspended its entire city tram network as part of a vast public transportation infrastructure upgrade. Starting Monday, August 3, all tram lines in the city ceased operations, replaced by a fleet of alternative buses.
With the suspension of lines 3, 5, 14, and 19, they join lines 2 and 8, which were halted earlier, effectively stopping the entire tram network in the Italian capital.
According to the city's transportation company ATAC and Rome's mobility authority, the upgrades are intended to prepare the infrastructure for ten new CAF Urbos trams acquired under the European Union recovery plan.
This project includes upgrading the Nomentana power station, replacing old rails, and revamping major public transit arteries throughout the city. The goal is to enable the operation of an advanced tram fleet featuring air conditioning, improved accessibility, and modern infrastructure.
According to the published schedule, some tram lines are set to resume on September 7, while full completion and restoration of service are planned for November 23, 2026.
Until then, city residents and tourists will need to rely on the replacement bus services operating along tram routes.
