The impact occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 5, 2026, with NASA confirming the event in a video shared on social media that explained what happened and why the rocket stage ultimately struck the lunar surface.
According to the space agency, the Falcon 9 upper stage was launched in January 2025 to deploy two commercial lunar landers. After completing its mission, the rocket stage remained in an uncontrolled orbit instead of being directed to a planned disposal trajectory.
