A major police operation is underway in Vienna's 18th district after a robbery alarm was triggered at a jewelry store on Währinger Straße on Thursday afternoon, August 6, 2026.

According to Vienna Police (LPD Wien), the alarm was activated at approximately 3:00 p.m. local time after an armed individual reportedly entered the store.

Police said employees were able to leave the premises safely before officers arrived. Authorities are currently working to determine how many people, if any, remain inside the store as the situation continues to unfold.

The area around Währinger Straße remains cordoned off, with a significant police presence in place. Officers have urged the public to avoid the area and follow instructions from emergency personnel while the operation continues.

In a subsequent update, Vienna Police warned against speculation circulating on social media and in some media reports.

"Even though some media outlets are currently speculating about the motive, perpetrator and sequence of events, we cannot confirm these details at this time," police said, adding that reports of an alleged "brutal assault" have not been confirmed.

Authorities emphasized that they will release additional information only after facts have been verified. The operation remains ongoing.
