Drama at Eurovision: Burgas Will Be the Host City, Bulgarian Capital Sofia Lost

At the last minute and after weeks of discussions and delays: the European Broadcasting Union announced Burgas, Bulgaria, as the host city of Eurovision 2027.

The competition that began between the capital Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas was surprisingly decided in favor of Burgas, the popular and touristy coastal city that met the tender conditions.

For Sofia, this is a crushing loss, as to date there has been no country in which the first competition it hosted was not held in its capital city.

The Eurovision Song Contest will take place in May 2026. The semi-finals are expected to be held on May 11 and 13. Israel is expected to participate in the second semi-final as May 11 is Remembrance Day and the eve of Independence Day.

Yesterday, the European Broadcasting Union, which produces Eurovision, issued an unusual statement stating that "the winning country will henceforth not necessarily be the host country." However, the intention was broader and did not necessarily concern hosting the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.

So What Do We Do in Burgas?

Burgas, located on the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria, is a destination that offers a combination of a relaxing vacation, attractions, nightlife, shopping, and excursions in the area.

The city's coastline is the main attraction and is also expected to be at the center of Eurovision events, including the establishment of the Eurovillage, the Eurovision Park that is established every year in the host city for the benefit of fans of the competition.

The city is characterized by wide beaches, a promenade packed with restaurants, cafes, bars and stalls, and an atmosphere that becomes especially lively in the summer months. It should be noted that the Eurovision Song Contest is held in May.

During the day, tourists who come to the competition will be able to enjoy the sea and the sun, and in the evening, continue their entertainment at one of the bars and clubs in the area.
