Punta Cana Airport. Photo: Shutterstock Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in the Dominican Republic is introducing artificial intelligence technology designed to strengthen the detection of drugs and undeclared currency in passenger baggage.
The airport announced the implementation of SeeTrue's AI platform, which works with Leidos' CT ClearScan baggage scanner to provide automated analysis of CT images at airport security checkpoints.
The technology is intended to help screening personnel identify concealed contraband in real time while maintaining the processing speeds needed to handle the airport's large volume of international passengers.
The implementation is being carried out with support from PBS Group, Leidos' local partner, as part of a wider modernization of security checkpoints at PUJ.
According to the airport and SeeTrue, the project represents the first use of SeeTrue's AI algorithms with ClearScan technology at an international airport specifically to enhance the detection of drugs and undeclared currency.
The software automatically analyzes CT scan images generated during baggage screening. It is designed to flag potential concealed drugs and undeclared cash, allowing security personnel to focus on suspicious items while continuing to process passengers efficiently.
Punta Cana Airport handles millions of international travelers each year, making security efficiency particularly important as passenger numbers grow.
The combination of Leidos' CT scanning hardware and SeeTrue's AI software is intended to improve both security capabilities and checkpoint capacity without creating unnecessary delays for travelers.
Alberto Smith, Director of Landside & Cargo Operations at Punta Cana Airport , said the technology provides the airport with capabilities that were previously unavailable at its checkpoints.
The airport said the new system forms part of its broader investment in safety and operational efficiency.
The airport's modernization comes as aviation authorities and airports increasingly explore artificial intelligence and advanced CT scanning to strengthen passenger and baggage screening.
SeeTrue CEO and co-founder Assaf Frenkel said the Punta Cana implementation demonstrates how CT technology combined with AI can improve the detection of contraband moving through airports.
The project also builds on Punta Cana Airport's recent recognition at the 2026 World Airport Awards, where it was named the Best Airport in Central America and the Caribbean.
With the new AI-enabled screening system, PUJ is positioning itself as an early adopter of technology designed to identify hidden contraband while supporting the operational demands of a major international gateway.
