Hailstorms. Photo: Shutterstock Spain is facing a spell of severe weather on Monday, with meteorologists warning of very strong thunderstorms, torrential rain, large hail and powerful winds across parts of the country.
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued orange weather warnings for areas of Aragon and Catalonia, indicating a significant danger of serious impacts.
According to AEMET, some areas could experience very heavy and persistent rainfall capable of producing local flooding. The strongest storms may also bring exceptionally large hail, with hailstones potentially exceeding 5 centimeters in diameter.
Very strong wind gusts are another concern, while meteorologists have warned that the development of a tornado cannot be ruled out in the most intense storms.
The storm threat is particularly significant in parts of Aragon and Catalonia, where atmospheric conditions are expected to support powerful thunderstorms.
For residents and visitors, sudden changes in weather conditions could make travel more difficult, particularly in areas affected by intense rainfall, flooding or hail.
Drivers should take particular care on roads during the heaviest downpours, as rapid accumulation of water can lead to difficult driving conditions and temporary flooding.
Air travelers should also monitor flight information if traveling through airports in affected regions, as severe thunderstorms can potentially cause operational disruptions, including delays.
The weather situation is not limited to mainland Spain.
AEMET is also warning of significant storm surges in Menorca, with sudden fluctuations in sea level potentially exceeding 1.2 meters.
The warning is particularly relevant for people near beaches, coastal promenades, harbors and other exposed areas. Visitors should follow local instructions and avoid approaching the shoreline during dangerous conditions.
Other parts of Spain are also under weather alerts. AEMET has issued yellow warnings for heavy and persistent rainfall in western mainland areas, meaning travelers could encounter difficult conditions even outside the areas facing the highest-level storm warnings.
While yellow warnings indicate a lower level of danger than orange alerts, heavy rain can still cause localized disruption, particularly when it persists for an extended period.
