August Full Moon Celebrations in Athens. Photo: Shutterstock This year, Greece will once again celebrate one of the cultural events most associated with summer in the country, the "August Full Moon", which will take place on Friday, August 28, 2026.
As part of the event, which is being held for the 27th consecutive year, more than 100 archaeological sites, museums, monuments and historical sites across the country will be opened to the general public free of charge today (August 26).
The event, organized by the Greek Ministry of Culture through the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, offers visitors the opportunity to experience Greece's historical sites in an extraordinary atmosphere, under the light of the full moon.
According to the full program, 61 of the sites will host special cultural events, including concerts, theater performances, dance performances, exhibitions and guided tours. An additional 65 sites will remain open to visitors free of charge, generally from early evening until 11:00 p.m. or midnight.
The celebrations will not be limited to the evening of the full moon itself. The events will begin this evening and continue through the weekend. Local authorities, cultural institutions and community organizations are participating in the events.
Participating sites across the country are expected to include archaeological sites and museums in various regions of Greece, so the event also offers tourists staying outside Athens a chance to explore local heritage in a slightly different way.
