Travel Chaos During August Bank Holiday Weekend with Strikes and Cancelled Trains

Families planning to travel by train over the August Bank Holiday weekend are being warned of several planned engineering works that will affect selected routes across Britain. 

The East Midlands Railway (EMR) will also be operating a significantly reduced service as members of the RMT union take strike action.

Interruptions Caused by Planned Work

According to Network Rail, the vast majority of railway services will operate normally from Saturday, August 29, to Monday, August 31, 2026. However, some major projects will require temporary service changes, with alternative arrangements including rail replacement buses and diverted trains.

Passengers are being encouraged to check National Rail or their train operator before traveling, particularly if their journey involves one of the affected routes.

No Trains Between Peterborough and London King’s Cross

One of the most significant disruptions will affect passengers traveling between Peterborough and London King’s Cross on Sunday, August 30.

There will be no trains on the route while engineers install new in-train signaling technology as part of the East Coast Digital Program.

Instead, passengers will have limited alternative options. Some LNER services will travel via Bedford and terminate at London St Pancras, while rail replacement buses will also operate.

Other Routes Affected

There will be no trains between Stafford and Wolverhampton on Sunday, August 30, but replacement buses will be available.

Work repairing Hawarden Swing Bridge means buses will replace trains between Wrexham and Bidston until Sunday, August 30, with normal services expected to resume on Monday, August 31.

Drainage and other improvement work between Wrexham and Shrewsbury will see replacement buses operating until August 30.

In the Leeds area, ongoing Transpennine Route Upgrade work will also result in buses replacing trains between Leeds, York and Selby.

Scotland Also Faces Engineering Disruption

There will be no trains between Dumfries and Barrhead, as well as between Kilmarnock and Ayr, because of continuing track improvement work.

The disruption on these routes will continue from Saturday, August 29, until September 14.

EMR Warns of Extremely Busy Trains During Strikes

The announced industrial action will affect Sunday, August 30, and Monday, August 31, with EMR advising customers to travel only if their journey is essential. Services will begin at approximately 08:00 on both days and finish before 19:00.

EMR is warning that trains operating between Sheffield, Nottingham and London St Pancras are likely to be extremely busy, potentially with standing room only. Queuing systems will be introduced at London St Pancras and Sheffield, and passengers may not be able to board their intended service or find a seat.

On both Sunday and Monday, EMR Intercity will operate one train per hour between Nottingham and London St Pancras, alongside one train per hour between Sheffield and London St Pancras.

EMR Connect will also operate one train per hour between Corby and London St Pancras.

No EMR rail replacement bus services will be provided.

Further Strike Dates in September

The RMT has also announced further strike action affecting EMR on Wednesday, September 16, and Thursday, September 17.

EMR is still assessing the impact of those strikes and said timetable changes will be published once confirmed.

The planned Intercity timetable uplift has also been moved to Tuesday, September 1, because of the August Bank Holiday industrial action.
