5 Dead and 68 Injured in Christmas Market Car Attack in Germany
A serious car attack tonight in the city of Magdeburg, in which a Saudi man ran over crowds at the local Christmas market. Following the event, the market was closed and German federal security forces rushed to the scene. Chancellor of Germany: "My thoughts are with the victims and their families." At least 68 injured, including two dead, in a car attack in Germany, tonight (Friday) in the city of Magdeburg.
According to police reports, around 21:04 local time, the car driver sped towards the crowds enjoying the Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg, hitting many of them.
The 50-year-old driver, a doctor of Saudi origin, was caught and interrogated by the police and according to reports, he is a Saudi refugee who came to Germany in 2006.
The local police reported that due to the car attack in the city's local Christmas market, extensive police operations are underway.
The police called on residents to stay in their homes and not to come to the area and complicate the investigation.
The Christmas market in the city center has been closed.
Chancellor of Germany tweeted on the X page: "The reports from Magdeburg suggest something terrible. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand with you and the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue forces in these anxious hours."
