As part of a strategic plan for preserving the old city of Rhodes, the Greek Ministry of Culture has announced a preservation project for the Grand Palace on the island, also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
As part of the initiative, a research team from the University of Crete will map the current condition of the structure, identify damaged areas, and propose restoration plans. It has not yet been published how much time has been allocated for the renovation and upgrading of the structure, but work will begin soon.

Additionally, solutions will be developed for making the palace accessible for people with disabilities and improving the tourism experience, including upgrading lighting, ventilation, and signage systems.

According to her, the palace is the central structure in the old city, and the planned renovation will also include better connections between the site and the surrounding gardens and buildings, alongside the creation of a new open sculpture gallery.

"The Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes", located at the northern edge of the old city, was built in the 14th century by the Knights Hospitallers and served as a governance center and defensive fortress. After the conquest of Rhodes by the Ottomans in 1522, the palace underwent changes and served as a prison.
In the 20th century, during the Italian rule, the structure was restored in an effort to return it to its original character. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and serves as a central museum for the history of Rhodes and the Middle Ages.

Greek Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni: "The old city of Rhodes is one of Greece's most prominent historical advantages. We must invest in this area, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, to create a better future for the city and its residents. Making the palace accessible and preserving it are our top priorities".
