Athens Airport. Photo: Amit Kotler Ahens International Airport continues to grow, but at the same time it is changing the way its grandiose expansion project - which began recently - will be carried out.
In its first-half 2026 financial statements, the airport aligns with its operational success announcements (including 4 million passengers in August and 15.8 million since the start of the year, a 4.5% increase from the same period last year).
The airport management has decided to change the format for implementing the 40 Million Passenger Plan (40 MAP), and move to a more gradual and flexible approach. The existing plan for 40 million passengers remains the reference plan, but the airport will also examine solutions that allow capacity to increase beyond the specified 40 million passengers per year.
At this stage, the existing tender will be terminated, and a new open tender will be issued for the construction of the southern wing of the main terminal (AB) and the expansion of the satellite terminal (C). At the same time, alternatives for future expansion will be examined, while minimizing the impact on current activities and commercial areas.
The total investment cost in increasing capacity by the end of 2030 is expected to reach €950 million.
