Athens Airport. Photo: rawf8 / Shutterstock.com Athens Airport has today, September 17, announced that a major infrastructure project is getting underway, with work beginning on the western runway as part of what is described as the largest airport maintenance project in the country.
For the first time in the airport's 25-year operating history, a comprehensive program is being carried out to rehabilitate its runways and taxiways and upgrade their Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) systems.
AGL is used to support aircraft movements and provide visual guidance for pilots during operations, particularly in lower visibility and at night.
Athens Airport. Photo: ShutterstockThe project will use new materials and techniques described as innovative for this type of airport work in both Greece and Europe. The aim is to improve the airport's infrastructure and prepare it for future operations.
The rehabilitation of the western runway system will be carried out in nine phases between September 1, 2026, and May 31, 2027.
As part of the preparations for the second phase of the project, the western runway will be closed on September 21 and 22, 2026.
The temporary closure is required to allow the necessary preparation work to be completed safely before the second phase begins.
Phase two is scheduled to run from September 23 through November 2, 2026.
The airport has encouraged passengers and other airport users to follow updates as the project progresses.
The airport says the project represents a significant investment in its infrastructure, with the works planned in stages to allow the wider program to progress safely.
