United States Independence Day. Photo: Shutterstock The United States Embassy in London issued a security alert for US citizens in the UK last night (Sunday, September 27, 2026), following a security incident near RAF Fairford Air Force Base in Gloucestershire.
The embassy called on American citizens in the area to exercise caution, be vigilant, and act in accordance with the instructions of local authorities.
According to British police, at approximately 00:45, a report was received of three suspicious vehicles moving towards the base. Armed police arrived at the base area and arrested five men. The suspects were initially arrested on suspicion of offences under the British Explosives Act, and later on suspicion of "preparing a terrorist act", in accordance with section 5 of the Terrorism Act.
Following the incident, police set up a checkpoint within a radius of about 400 meters around the vehicles, and the British Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was called in to examine them. As a precaution, approximately 85 homes in the area were evacuated. A nearby sports center was opened for residents who were evacuated and could not stay with friends or family.
The American embassy noted that British authorities classify the terrorist threat level in the country as "Severe," and warned that facilities, events, and organizations associated with the United States may be at high risk.
The British police emphasize that the investigation is in the early stages and that the five suspects are still being held in custody.
