Photo: Shutterstock After Catania-Fontanarossa Airport suspended operations on Tuesday, airport management issued another official update this morning, September 28, at 8:00 AM, stating that because volcanic ash continues to be emitted into the atmosphere, all flight operations at the airport will remain suspended until 11:59 PM tonight (Monday).
This significantly extends the shutdown, after the previous update said activity was expected to be suspended until noon.
The airport said passengers should check with their airline about flight status before arriving at the airport, and that further updates will be provided as developments unfold.
For passengers, this means continued cancellations, changes, and diversions of flights to and from Catania throughout the day; even after activity resumes, disruptions may continue due to the backlog of flights and the need to return the schedule to normal.
The event has been ongoing for several days, against the backdrop of activity at the Etna volcano and volcanic ash in the atmosphere, which requires aviation restrictions for safety reasons.
