One of the most visited and largest islands in Greece, Crete, is under a prolonged storm warning that is expected to peak tonight, between October 2 and 3.

According to the official weather forecast, hundreds of millimeters of rain are expected to fall within a few hours, which could cause flooding and road blockages in parts of the island where infrastructure is less advanced.

The storm hit the island on Tuesday, mainly in the center and west, in Rethymno and Chania. However, warnings were also issued for residents of the center and east of the island, in the Heraklion area, mainly regarding thunderstorms and lightning.

Yesterday, the authorities instructed residents to avoid unnecessary movements and those who do not have to do so were advised not to leave the house.

The storm is expected to last until Sunday, October 4, when weather conditions will return to normal for the season.
