A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near Burias in the Philippines on Thursday, October 8, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at 08:07:59 UTC, with its epicenter located about 17 kilometers southwest of Burias. The USGS recorded the earthquake at a depth of 52.1 kilometers.

The earthquake was recorded at 5.601°N and 125.152°E. The USGS classified the event as magnitude 5.5 and marked its origin status as reviewed.

The USGS PAGER system assigned the earthquake a green alert, indicating that the estimated economic and human impacts were limited.

Burias Island, part of Masbate province in the Philippines, is popular for its excellent island hopping tours, white-sand beaches, and dramatic rock formations.
