One of the most familiar and often cumbersome tasks for passengers on connecting flights is about to become much simpler. The international airline alliance oneworld has announced the launch of new digital technology that will allow passengers to check in for flights operated by different airlines in the alliance through the digital interface of their preferred airline.
The move, announced by the alliance on October 12, 2026, is intended to reduce the need to switch between websites and apps of different companies and make the flight preparation process more convenient, faster, and uniform.
The new system is available at the alliance level to all 15 oneworld member airlines, which together connect nearly 1,000 destinations worldwide.
The main innovation is the ability to handle the check-in process for a route that includes more than one airline, without necessarily having to perform the operation separately with each operator.
Using the digital interface of the passenger's preferred airline, it is possible to scan the passport, complete the check-in process, and receive boarding passes for the companies operating the flights on the route.
Boarding passes can be saved directly to the mobile phone's digital wallet, so that they will be available for presentation during transit through the airport.
The technology is based on a platform developed by oneworld, which allows the computer systems of the various companies to communicate with each other and share the information required to carry out operations.
The alliance gives as an example a passenger who uses the American Airlines app, but part of his itinerary is operated by Malaysia Airlines.
Instead of checking in separately with each company, the system allows the process to be handled through the digital channel familiar to the passenger, even when the flights are operated by different companies.
The solution is designed for combined routes, where the passenger may take off with one company and continue to the final destination with another company.
This is a particularly significant change for intercontinental routes and business trips that include multiple destinations.
15 Airlines and Almost 1,000 Destinations
The oneworld alliance brings together some of the world's most prominent airlines, including American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines.
The alliance also includes Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Fiji Airways, Oman Air and Royal Air Maroc, under the alliance's current membership structure.
The scope of the network allows it to connect thousands of flight combinations around the world, with each company maintaining its own reservation and operational systems.
The new technology is designed to create a more seamless service experience between the companies, even when they are actually separate operators.
Oneworld plans to continue developing the platform and expand its capabilities.
Among the options being considered for the next stages are broader support for tickets marketed under codeshare agreements and the integration of dynamic digital boarding passes.
The move could reduce some of the complexity involved in multi-airline travel and help passengers manage their flight itinerary from one place.
However, the service does not eliminate the requirement to meet the entry conditions of the destination countries, security checks, or baggage delivery procedures when these are required.
The new launch fits into a broader trend in the aviation industry, which seeks to move more operations to digital services and reduce reliance on counters and manual processes.
For travelers planning long vacations, connecting flights, or business trips, the ability to perform operations with multiple airlines in one interface can be a significant time and hassle saver.
The alliance is already planning the next stages of development, thereby marking the direction: less switching between systems, more passenger control over the travel process, and a more digital and seamless flight experience.
