Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe's major airport hubs, handled approximately 6.1 million passengers in September 2026, an increase of 1.6% compared to the same month last year, according to data published by Fraport, the airport's operator.

According to the company, demand for traditional vacation destinations remained strong throughout the month, thanks in part to school holidays in Bavaria and other regions of the country, which continued into September.

However, in the first nine months of the year, passenger traffic at the port totaled approximately 47.5 million, a decrease of 0.2% compared to the same period in 2025.

Fraport notes that geopolitical tensions and strikes at Lufthansa have weighed on operations. The strikes affected almost 700,000 passengers at Frankfurt Airport between January and September. According to the company's estimate, if the strikes were eliminated, passenger traffic during this period would have increased by about 1.3%.

Decrease in Aircraft Movements, Increase in Cargo

In the cargo sector, a positive trend was recorded in September: the volume of air cargo and air mail amounted to 174,773 tons, an increase of 2.5% compared to September 2025.

Meanwhile, aircraft movements fell by 3.5% to 40,539 takeoffs and landings. The decrease was largely due to a 25.2% reduction in aircraft movements on domestic German routes, partly because flights to Bremen and Stuttgart ceased.

The data indicates a moderate recovery in passenger traffic in Frankfurt during September, but also the ongoing impact of operational disruptions on port activity since the beginning of the year.
