Italy has introduced temporary air traffic flow restrictions after anomalies were detected in the data transmission network supporting air traffic control services across the country, according to air navigation services provider ENAV.
The issue was identified overnight on October 16. ENAV said contingency systems allowed it to manage air traffic normally until 6 a.m. local time, without reducing operational capacity.
However, as traffic increased and the technical problems persisted, the company introduced flow regulation measures from 6 a.m. to maintain safety. The measures temporarily reduced the number of aircraft that could be managed in Italian airspace.
Technical checks have identified the source of the anomalies within the data transmission network, but investigations into their causes are continuing. ENAV said it is working to restore full system operation.
The company also ruled out malicious activity as the cause of the disruption.
ENAV said it had activated alternative communication systems to handle as many flights as possible while the issue remains unresolved, with safety its priority.
The restrictions could affect flight operations across Italian airspace while the measures remain in place. Passengers traveling to, from or through Italy should check with their airlines for updates on individual flights.
