The tourism and hospitality industry in the European Union is experiencing an extraordinary boom, with official figures showing a full recovery and steady market growth over the past two years.

Recent reports from the European Union's statistical office, Eurostat, present a clear picture of growing demand for accommodation and hospitality services, with key growth indicators surpassing early forecasts and indicating strong economic stability across the tourism sector.

Record Data on Tourist Overnight Stays Across Europe

According to official and final figures published in mid-October, the total number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation across the European Union recorded a significant increase of 2.2% during 2025.

This comprehensive annual figure reflects increased traveler interest in the continent's destinations and shows that hotels, holiday villages, and other accommodation sites attracted more guests and generated a significant volume of activity throughout the year.

This impressive growth continues directly into the months of 2026, as shown by the official summary data for the first half of the year.

The bureau's reports show that tourist overnight stays in European Union countries increased by 1.7 percent during the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year. This trend suggests demand remains strong and shows no signs of slowing, even during transitions between peak seasons.

Destinations Driving Demand in Europe

The European Tourism Map for 2026 shows particularly high demand for Mediterranean destinations and the continent's well-known holiday resorts.

According to Eurostat, the Canary Islands in Spain, the Rhône-Alpes region in France and Andalusia in Spain led the number of nights booked through online platforms in the first quarter of the year. The Lazio region in Italy, where Rome is located, the Paris region, Tyrol in Austria and Lombardy in northern Italy were also among the regions where significant tourism activity was recorded.

At the same time, a survey published by the European Tourism Commission in July 2026 indicates that Spain, Italy, France and Greece are the preferred countries for Europeans planning a holiday from June to November.

Surge in Online Bookings

A very central part of the industry's success this year is attributed to the change in tourists' consumption habits and the massive transition to digital technologies.

Data for the second quarter of 2026 indicate that the number of tourist overnight stays booked online through digital platforms and websites jumped by 5.3%. This official figure shows that consumers now prefer to plan trips and book accommodation independently and directly online, forcing the hospitality market to fully adapt to the digital arena.

Europeans Prefer to Vacation Within the Continent

Another fascinating statistic that emerges from the analysis of official travel patterns of the continent's residents concerns their preferred tourist destinations. Reports indicate that over ninety percent of all trips and journeys made by residents of European Union countries remain and are carried out within the Union itself.

This figure highlights the strength of European domestic tourism and shows that most citizens prefer to vacation, visit, and travel in neighboring countries on the continent rather than to distant destinations on other continents.

Official figures from the European Statistical Office show that the European tourism industry is currently on solid ground.

The combination of a steady increase in the number of annual overnight stays, a clear preference among local residents to travel within the continent, and an impressive surge in online bookings, ensures that the hospitality and hotel sector will continue to be a key and leading economic growth engine for the entire European Union in the coming years.
