Lufthansa Group's Discover Airlines' Airbus A330 has already made its first commercial flight to Florida and entered regular service carrying the newly announced AeroSHARK technology. The technology, which mimics the structure of shark skin, reduces air resistance and saves fuel and reduces polluting emissions.

Lufthansa Group announced that Discover Airlines' Airbus A330 has become the world's first Airbus aircraft to enter regular commercial service after extensive installation of AeroSHARK technology, which mimics the unique structure of shark skin.

The aircraft, whose registration number is D-AIKP, already made its first commercial flight to Florida in the United States last Thursday, after successfully completing a series of tests and test flights

This is a significant milestone for the Lufthansa Group, which is advancing the technology with the aim of reducing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by improving the aerodynamic efficiency of its aircraft.

As we published in September, Lufthansa Technik then advanced to the final stage of the AeroSHARK certification process for Airbus A330 aircraft.

At the time, it was reported that Discover Airlines' A330-300 would be the first Airbus aircraft in the world to be equipped with the innovative technology, and that after the coating was installed, it would undergo a series of tests and test flights to prepare for the required certifications.

Now, about a month and a half later, the company announces the completion of a significant milestone: the aircraft has already entered regular commercial operation and is flying passengers to the company's destinations.

The company installed the coating on the aircraft at the end of August at Dresden Airport in Germany. After installation, extensive test flights were conducted, and data analysis confirmed that the technology can be used safely and reliably in regular commercial operations.

How Can Shark Skin Save Millions of Dollars in Aviation?

AeroSHARK technology was developed by Lufthansa Technik and Surventis, and is based on a principle taken from the natural world.

Shark skin is made up of microscopic grooves that help reduce friction with the water. The engineers were able to implement a similar principle using a transparent coating sheet, which includes tiny grooves about 50 micrometers high, arranged according to the direction of air flow.

The coating is installed on the fuselage and engine covers, reducing aerodynamic drag during flight.

According to data from the Lufthansa Group, the technology can reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by about 1% per flight.

Although this rate seems relatively small, multiplied by thousands of flight hours and a large number of aircraft, the economic and environmental impact may be considerable.

According to the updated data published by the company, as of September 2026, 23 Lufthansa Group aircraft have already been equipped with AeroSHARK technology.

The cumulative savings from aircraft equipped with the system currently exceed 20 tons of jet fuel per day, along with a reduction of about 64 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

So far, the technology has been applied mainly to Boeing aircraft, including various 777 models. Its current entry into service on the Airbus A330 opens up possibilities for expanding the use of the technology to additional aircraft fleets.

The company emphasizes that the current progress is not limited to a single aircraft, but may pave the way for broader use of the advanced coating on long-range passenger aircraft.

Sascha Unterbarnscheidt, Chief Operating Officer of Discover Airlines, commented on the achievement and emphasized that the introduction of the aircraft into regular commercial service is an important milestone for the company and the project partners. According to him, the company is proud that the world's first Airbus aircraft equipped with advanced technology has already begun flying passengers to its vacation destinations.

Mastercard also supports the project as part of a strategic partnership with the Lufthansa Group to promote technologies designed to improve operational efficiency and sustainability in the aviation industry.

The entry into service of the new aircraft marks a significant transition from development, testing, and certification to commercial operation, and shows how nature-inspired technology can become a practical tool for improving passenger-aircraft efficiency.

For the Lufthansa Group, this is another milestone in efforts to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and for the entire aviation industry, it is another step towards expanding the use of advanced aerodynamic technologies.
