One person has been killed and four others injured in "very serious events" in Trappes, in the Yvelines department west of Paris, according to French Justice Minister Sébastien Lecornu.

In a statement posted on social media, Lecornu said the individual involved had been apprehended and placed in police custody. He added that security forces and judicial authorities were fully mobilized in response.

France's National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has also announced that it is monitoring the situation.

Lecornu said the competent authorities would provide further information in due course.

“This Friday morning, an individual opened fire from his vehicle on several people he encountered in Trappes and La Verrière,” said Ali Rabeh, mayor of Trappes. He offered condolences to the deceased victim’s family and friends and expressed support for those injured.

The mayor also praised the response by police and emergency services, adding that the municipality remained in close contact with the relevant authorities.

Rabeh said the city would establish a psychological support unit within the following hours to assist people affected by the events. He also urged residents to remain cautious and show solidarity with one another.

French President Emmanuel Macron issued the following statement: "Deep emotion following the shooting attack that occurred in Trappes and La Verrière.

One person has died. Several others are seriously injured. Our thoughts go out to the victims, their families, and all the residents of Yvelines. In this terrible ordeal, the Nation stands by their side. Recognition to our law enforcement forces who have already proceeded with the arrest of the perpetrator."

Macron added that the national antiterrorist prosecutor's office has taken charge.
