The United States Embassy in Chile issued a travel advisory this week to its citizens following a wave of violent protests in the city Valparaíso, one of the most popular cities among tourists in the country.
The protests are taking place against the backdrop of a new government legislative proposal regarding fishing quotas, which has sparked outrage among local fishermen and civic activists.
During the protests held on March 25 and 26, severe clashes were recorded between demonstrators and police forces near the National Congress building in the city.
Another area affected by the riots is Playa Caleta Portales – a tourist area that includes a bathing beach and a popular fish market located along Avenida España.
This location serves as a popular visit point for many tourists, including visitors from the United States and other countries.
The U.S. Embassy stresses that the advisory is in effect at least until March 31, urging U.S. citizens to remain highly vigilant, avoid approaching the coastal area, and follow local authorities' instructions.
