Northern Ireland police have confirmed that a viable postal device was sent to a hotel in Ebrington, Derry/Londonderry, prompting an emergency response that continued from Tuesday afternoon (October 27 )until close to midnight.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed the discovery on Wednesday, October 28, saying the investigation was still at an early stage. Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney, area commander for Derry City and Strabane, said investigators were pursuing several lines of inquiry, including the possibility that dissident republicans were responsible.
Police have not confirmed who sent the device or established responsibility for the incident.
Kearney condemned the incident and thanked members of the public for their patience and cooperation during the operation. She appealed to anyone with information that could help identify those responsible to contact police, even if they believe the details are insignificant.
Anyone with information can call 101 and quote reference number 1089 of October 27, 2026, or submit information through the PSNI’s online witness appeal form. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or through its website.
The police update comes as Derry/Londonderry prepares for several days of events marking the 40th anniversary of its well-known Halloween Festival. Kearney said officers would continue patrolling across the city and district, working with local communities to keep the public safe.
