The United States Embassy in Costa Rica has issued a warning to travelers following a concerning increase in volcanic activity at Poás, one of the country's most popular tourist sites. The alert comes in light of a yellow alert declared by the National Emergency Commission of Costa Rica (CNE), and an orange alert from the OVSICORI Volcanological Center – due to the emission of toxic gases, rock ash, and increased seismic activity.
Poás, located about 50 km north of the capital San José, is considered one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. Its massive crater and lava landscape provoke significant interest – but also pose a real risk.
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy noted:
"Travelers are advised to exercise caution, check updated alerts before any visit to Poás, and be prepared for the immediate closure of the park, which may occur without prior notice."
Safety guidelines include:
Complete avoidance of areas closed to the public.
Use of masks and goggles in the event of exposure to ash or gases.
Maintaining contact with tour operators, hotel staff, and local authorities.
Registering in the U.S. Department of State's STEP program for safety updates.
Additionally, it should be noted that volcanic activity may also impact airports and land transportation routes.
