A 225-kilogram American aerial bomb dating back to World War II was discovered in Nuremberg, Germany, on Tuesday morning, November 3, 2026, prompting preparations for a possible evacuation of the surrounding area.

The unexploded bomb was found during construction work southeast of the city's South Cemetery (Südfriedhof), in an area between Trierer Straße, Schnorrstraße and the railway marshalling yard.

According to the latest updates published by the City of Nuremberg, the bomb is located approximately three meters underground. Demolition expert Christian Scheibinger arrived at the site shortly before 1 p.m. to assess the situation and coordinate the necessary measures.

The fire department is working alongside the bomb disposal specialist to determine the potential evacuation zone. Authorities are also preparing a map showing the affected area and a list of addresses that may need to be evacuated.

An initial evacuation radius of up to 500 meters is being considered. However, the authorities are attempting to reduce the size of the affected area by constructing an earthen wall around the discovery site.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the city had not yet published an official evacuation order, an address list or details of road closures and public transport disruptions. A public information hotline had also not been activated.

The discovery is not affecting the Consumenta trade fair at Nuremberg's exhibition center, which is continuing as scheduled on Tuesday, according to the city's official updates.

The discovery of unexploded World War II ammunition remains a recurring challenge in German cities. Large quantities of Allied bombs were dropped on German industrial and urban centers during the war, and some failed to detonate. Construction and infrastructure projects continue to uncover these explosives decades later.

Authorities have not yet announced when the bomb will be defused or whether residents and businesses in the surrounding area will be required to leave their premises.
