Athens may not be Vienna, Prague, ora Berlin when it comes to Christmas markets, but in recent years the Greek capital has been investing more and more in winter celebrations and becoming an original destination for a vacation during the warm holiday season.
Instead of snow and extreme European cold, you will find here a combination of relatively calm mild winter weather (13-17 degrees during the day and between 6 and 8 at night), illuminated streets, festive markets, Greek food, bustling nightlife and, of course, shopping at attractive prices.
The holiday season in Athens begins in late November and lasts until the Greek "Epiphany" on January 6. This year, the city is expected to offer a host of events and attractions for visitors, along with a holiday atmosphere that grows stronger as Christmas and New Year's Eve approach.
In the Heart of the City: the Giant Fir Tree
Syntagma Square, opposite the Greek Parliament building, is the center of Athens' Christmas celebrations. Every year, a giant fir tree, imported from northern Greece, is placed in the square and decorated with thousands of lights and colorful decorations.

The lights also continue onto Ermou Street, the city's main pedestrian shopping street, as well as Plaka, Monastiraki and Kolonaki.
Christmas Factory: Christmas Market in Technopolis
One of the city's most prominent Christmas events is the DEI Christmas Factory, which takes place in the Technopolis complex, in the historic industrial building of the former gas factory in the Gazi neighborhood.

This year's theme is "Christmas Without Borders," with a festive journey between countries, with interactive workshops and activities for children. The venue will also feature shows, installations, workshops, food and attractions in a festive atmosphere. Admission is a symbolic price of about 5 euros. Several additional, but smaller, markets are expected to open throughout the city.
Lights, Ice Skating and Winter Atmosphere
Another destination worth including is the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center (SNFCC), located in the Kallithea area. Every year the complex is decorated with festive lighting, light displays, performances and sometimes even an ice skating rink. The park and artificial lake also become part of the holiday experience.

The Psiri neighborhood, with its cafes, bars and restaurants, and the picturesque streets of Plaka also offer a particularly festive experience.
Shopping: From Black Friday to January Sales
Oh, you've come to the important part of the article. The first shopping spree of the season begins on Black Friday, Friday, November 27, 2026, and will continue until Cyber Monday on November 30.

But the biggest discounts come in January. The official sales season in Greece begins on January 11, 2027, and will last until the end of February. During this period, you can find discounts on fashion, footwear, electrical goods, cosmetics, and household products.
Alongside Ermo Street, the main shopping hub, you can also find discounts at the Attica and Notos shopping centers and the large shopping centers outside the city.
When Is the Best Time to Arrive?
For those who want to fully experience the Christmas atmosphere, it is recommended to arrive between December 10 and 23. During this period, holiday decorations are already scattered throughout the city, the Christmas market in Technopolis is active, stores are offering promotions for the holiday, and the city is at the height of its festive atmosphere.

For those for whom shopping is a top priority, it is worth aiming for mid-January to early February, when the winter sales begin.
