The Lufthansa Group is purchasing additional long-haul Airbus planes, increasing its orders for A350-1000 aircraft from 10 to 15. The new planes from this order will be delivered between 2028 and 2030.
The Lufthansa Group had already ordered 10 A350-1000 planes in March 2023, with deliveries set to start in April 2026. This type of aircraft is 73.8 meters long and offers about 15 percent more capacity than the 350-900 model.
The total value of the order amounts to around $2 billion. With a total of 60 A350-900 and 15 A350-1000, the Lufthansa Group is one of the largest A350 customers in the world.
Carsten Spohr, Chairman and CEO of the aviation group, said: "Today's order underscores our strong trust in our long-standing, close, and successful partnership with Airbus. With the most advanced long-haul A350 planes, we are accelerating the largest fleet modernization the group has ever undertaken. We are investing more than ever to make air transport more sustainable, aiming to achieve our CO₂ reduction goals while offering our customers the highest level of comfort with top-notch travel experience.
Including today's order, the Lufthansa Group has ordered 770 aircraft from Airbus throughout its history and is proud to be Airbus's largest customer worldwide. With the upcoming integration of ITA Airways in January, the Lufthansa Group's Airbus fleet will grow by another 100 short-haul and long-haul planes."
Compared to previous generation aircraft, the new planes in the Lufthansa Group fleet consume up to 35% less fuel and emit less CO₂. The Lufthansa Group aims to cut its net CO₂ emissions by half by 2030 compared to 2019 through reduction and compensation measures, and to achieve carbon-neutral CO₂ balance by 2050.
