stanbul Airport has marked a historic milestone in European aviation with the launch of its “Triple Runway” system — the first of its kind on the continent.
The inaugural operation was conducted from the airport’s control tower by Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, who issued the command for three Turkish Airlines flights to take off simultaneously — a symbolic first for the new system.
With the activation of three independent runways operating concurrently, Istanbul Airport becomes the first in Europe capable of executing simultaneous takeoffs and landings. This advancement increases the airport’s hourly traffic capacity from 120 to 148 aircraft movements, setting a new benchmark for efficiency and air traffic management.
This operational change not only streamlines traffic management in Istanbul but also across the European airspace, making it faster, safer, and more efficient. The additional 28 aircraft movements per hour mean shorter wait times for airlines, fewer delays for passengers, and reduced carbon emissions for the environment.
Turkey's national flag carrier, Turkish Airlines, plays a vital role in this achievement. With its extensive flight network connecting Istanbul to the world and its operational capabilities, Turkish Airlines enhances the effectiveness of this operation and elevates the passenger experience to the highest level.
This innovative system plays a crucial role in supporting the vision of iGA Istanbul Airport to accommodate a target of 200 million passengers per year. The airport will now be able to manage its intensive passenger and cargo traffic more efficiently, ensuring it is prepared for future traffic volumes. The system improves the predictability of air traffic, optimizes slot allocation, and ensures more efficient runway use.
Mehmet Kalyoncu, a board member of the airport, said: "I am very pleased to announce that starting from April 17, 2025, we will officially begin operations with a triple independent runway at iGA Istanbul Airport, marking a beginning in Europe and further strengthening Turkey's contribution to the international travel and aviation industry."
The new operational structure is supported by advanced technological solutions, and moreover, close coordination with Eurocontrol ensures seamless integration with European airspace, reducing delays and optimizing traffic flow. Air traffic control teams use the latest radar systems, navigational tools, and predictive analytics to ensure smooth operations. Real-time data enables controllers to make rapid decisions - a critical advantage, especially during peak times.
