7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Drake Passage in South America

No Tsunami Expected After Powerful Quake

Powerful earthquake hits Drake Passage – Today (Thursday), a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the Drake Passage – the marine area between South America and Antarctica.

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) issued an official statement (Tsunami Information Statement), indicating that despite the earthquake's magnitude, no tsunami is expected as a result of the event.

The quake occurred at 08:58 AM (Eastern U.S. Time) and was felt in the bordering areas of the southern Atlantic Ocean. At this time, no damage or casualties have been reported.

Authorities continue to monitor the developments but emphasize there is no threat to nearby coastlines.
