Photo: Shutterstock Following the decision by numerous foreign airlines to suspend their flights to and from Israel today (Sunday) and tomorrow, due to a missile from Yemen landing near Ben Gurion Airport, the Israel Pilots' Association issues an unusual public statement expressing regret over this decision, arguing it is unwarranted.
This was conveyed in the official statement from the Pilots' Association:
"The Israel Pilots' Association regrets the decision of airlines worldwide to suspend flights to Israel.
We can assert that Israel is a leader in global air defense, and a single incident does not justify such a decision.
This event underscores once again the importance of a strong, independent Israeli aviation sector with a sufficient fleet and aviation infrastructure spread across the country.
We, many of whom serve in reserves in both the Air Force squadrons and civilian aviation sectors, are committed to providing the citizens of Israel with full service with love, dedication, professionalism, and a sense of mission.
We call on the Israeli government to engage in significant discussions about the infrastructure and importance of Israeli aviation and to make decisions on the matter.
Such a discussion was last held in Israel in 2008."
Call to Strengthen National Aviation Infrastructure
The Pilots' Association emphasizes the urgent need for renewed government discussions about the future of Israeli civil aviation, including renewing investments in infrastructure, expanding the national fleet, and maintaining sustainable air sovereignty.
The direct appeal to the government arises from a complex security reality and a deep understanding within the Israeli aerial system — that independent aviation is not merely a transportation issue, but a strategic imperative.
