Since beginning his tenure in September 2023, Ethiopian Ambassador Tesfaye Yetayeh has embodied not just national representation, but a commitment to fostering resilience, stability, and a deepening strategic alliance with Israel.

Ethiopian Airlines was among the few airlines that continued flying to Israel even during the height of the conflict, a decision seen as a principled message above all.

In an interview with PassportNews, he recounts his two years in Israel, personal connections, economic opportunities between the nations, and what Ethiopia offers Israelis: mountains, history, roots, and flavors.

"I enjoy every moment in Israel"

The ambassador, residing in Herzliya, commutes daily to the embassy in Tel Aviv and engages in official meetings as part of his duties in Jerusalem. In an interview with Passport News, he shared his enjoyment of life in Israel, speaking warmly and affectionately about the country.

Throughout the conversation, he emphasized his empathy for the Israeli public and praised the local society, describing it as open, kind, and possessing a unique spirit.

Mr. Ambassador, how do you summarize your stay in Israel so far?

"I have been here for about two years, living in Tel Aviv and working in Jerusalem. I have met government officials, community members, and businesses, and the connections are very warm. I enjoy life here – the city, the people, and the work. One of the most impressive aspects for me is the connection Israelis feel towards Ethiopia – a sense of connection, curiosity, and respect. There is a historical and emotional bond, and the warm reception Ethiopian citizens receive is moving and encouraging".

How doest it feel to live in Israel after October 7th?

"Reality has changed, as we all know. But we stayed here. We continued operating – both our embassy and our airline. For us, it was clear. We do not abandon in difficult times. It was not just a logistical choice – it was a principled decision. It was a value-based stance, from a broader vision of our partnership with Israel".

Ethiopian Airlines was the only airline that did not stop flying through the hard times we had here. how did that happen?

"It is not just a question of aviation. It is a stance. It is solidarity. We see ourselves as partners and had a responsibility towards our passengers, the Ethiopian community, and the ties between the countries. We felt secure – and conveyed a clear message. We have a tradition of stability and regional responsibility, and that is part of our DNA. Even in times of uncertainty, strong standing is required – and that's what we chose to do."

How can you describe the economic ties between the two countries?

"Strong. with plenty of room to grow. We are talking about agriculture, renewable energy, textiles, industry, coffee, and of course tourism. Israeli companies are already active in Ethiopia, and there's room for expansion. Academic and research collaborations are also beginning to form, and there is mutual interest in investments in advanced fields like medical technology and water solutions. Ethiopia is a growing market with a young population open to innovation, and Israel brings unmatched expertise in areas like smart agriculture, water, and energy".

You speak a lot about tourism. What does Ethiopia have to offer Israelis?

"Everything. From Addis Ababa, a modern city with vibrant culture, through world heritage sites in the north, volcanic areas in the south, and even sites with direct connections to Jewish history. There are excellent restaurants, a vibrant art scene, friendly people – and this experience cannot be replicated anywhere else. Visitors to Ethiopia discover a country rich in landscapes, flavors, and heritage, managing to combine tradition with a contemporary lifestyle. We are heavily investing in tourism infrastructure – hotels, roads, visitor centers – so tourists feel at home".

Is it safe to travel around Ethiopia?

"Yes. Our government invests heavily in securing tourist sites. Addis is safe, with convenient transportation, developing infrastructure, and plenty of human warmth. Tourists feel at home there – and we work day and night to continually improve the experience. Additionally, there is tourist assistance in every major area, convenient flight routes, and clear guidelines for travelers. We understand the importance of security – and act accordingly".

And what about the Ethiopian community in Israel?

"It is a natural bridge between the people. We work with them, support them, take part in events and joint initiatives. It is a proud, warm, and connected community – and we are proud of it. It is an ambassador of goodwill between the countries. We strive to strengthen the sense of belonging – for both sides. There are youth exchange projects, promotion of Ethiopian culture in Israel, and cooperation with civil organizations. For us – it is a connection of hearts, not just interests".

What else would you like to see in the coming years in relations between Israel and Ethiopia?

"I would like to see more joint projects between higher education institutions, medical centers, startups, young entrepreneurs. The connection between people is just as important as the connection between governments. The closer we bring hearts together – the stronger we will become in terms of economy, security, and culture. I believe Ethiopia can become a new gateway for Israel to Africa, and we are working to build the infrastructure for that".

And finally – Mr. Ambassador, any message for Israelis?

"Yes, do not hesitate. Come see, taste, and experience our country. Ethiopia is a destination you have not known – and it is here, close, open, and waiting. We have a shared path, and we want to walk it together with you. This is not just an invitation for a visit – but to join a true partnership".
