Greece is more than just gyros, and Athens is much more than ouzo.

The Greek capital is reinventing itself, showcasing its potential as an exciting culinary destination filled with a variety of restaurants, bars, cafes, and bakeries. Whether Instagram-worthy or traditional, they are undeniably delicious. If you're planning your next trip or simply dreaming of a quick getaway to Greece, here are some must-visit recommendations to add to your itinerary: a luxury restaurant near the Acropolis, a family deli in the heart of the market, an unexpected cocktail bar, and a bakery where counting calories is forgotten. Bon appetit!

ManiMani
Almost Michelin, At a Fair Price

Located near the Acropoli metro station and the bustling pedestrian area, this restaurant is considered one of the best and most recommended in the city. In the past, it has received several awards, including some of the most prestigious from The New York Times and various guides. The menu offers an upgraded Greek experience, with dishes you might recognize from restaurants throughout the city and even neighborhood tavernas, but with unique interpretations. Don’t miss the appetizer trio (tzatziki, taramasalata, and fava). For mains, indulge in fish, pasta, and more. The wine list is very affordable by Israeli standards, and you should treat yourself to a cold bottle of rosé on a warm Greek evening.

Karamanlidika
Deli, Market, or Restaurant?

When you hear "hidden culinary gem," this is exactly what it means. Operating for over 60 years, Karamanlidika is located between the Monastiraki neighborhood and Omonia Square. Over the years, this endless market deli in the heart of the complex has evolved into a unique restaurant, with Maria the owner asking just one thing: Don’t order what you've already had elsewhere. The special menu includes Russian fish salad, a massive tray of meats, a selection of meat and legume-based dishes, and the highlight (at least for us), eggs in a sizzling pan with meat. It's not an omelet with sausage but something out of this world, making you want to return repeatedly and order the exact same dish despite Maria's plea. The atmosphere is warm and very enjoyable year-round, so it is recommended to book in advance. Oh, and try leaving without buying a few meats or cheeses to take home.

Little Kook
A Fairy Tale Cafe

Located in the trendy Psyri neighborhood, this cafe seems to be taken directly from a movie set featuring Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, or any fairy tale you choose. The place is one of Greece's most popular attractions today due to its "Instagram-worthy" nature, but the menu is not too shabby either, particularly its indulgent desserts. You'll find colorful ice creams, enormous cakes, pancakes with various toppings, beautifully crafted cocktails, and more. What's the catch? We're certainly not the first to discover this incredible place, as it's often very crowded, and reservations are not feasible. But honestly? It's worth the wait.

Bougatsadiko
Forget Counting Calories

Alongside gyros and tzatziki, a popular Greek fast-food offering is a variety of doughs: baked, fried, sweet, salty, with spinach, cheeses, honey... the list goes on. But there are pastries, and then there's this place, where several times a day you can watch the unique dough preparation as a kind of show for the customers and passers-by. It's not just for show; it's about showcasing the freshness of the materials used. Trust us, it's fresh, and you won’t regret it. The pastries are quite cheap, and you can choose a few, just not the calories? Save those for tomorrow. By the way, the square where the bakery is located has many other shops and restaurants.

White Turtule
Coffee is Not Just Freddo Espresso

The Greeks love their coffee, though I never quite understood it, but in recent years (not just in Athens), Greece's coffee culture has improved significantly. In every corner of Athens, you'll find a cafe with fancy espresso machines and baristas who know their craft. One of my favorites is this small spot, where coffee is served in professional ceramic cups alongside insane pastries and sandwiches to hit the spot when needed. Its proximity to the Ermou shopping street makes it a popular choice, and a great spot for a coffee break mid-shopping.

Rooster
The Most Playful Bar in the City

In the heart of the city, near the famous Agia Irini, lies one of the most fun bars in town. Rooster offers a professional cocktail bar with a skilled team preparing advanced drinks, alongside light bar food like salads, pizzas, and pastas, with a brunch served until 2:00 PM. The cocktail presentation is impressive, and the flavors are outstanding, but the experience is mainly enjoyable thanks to the friendly staff composed, as part of the agenda, of all genders and colors.
