The highest active volcano in Europe has erupted once more.

Mount Etna in Sicily erupted this afternoon (June 2, 25) while hikers were on the mountain. The hikers were recorded fleeing the scene at a run.

Last year's eruption in August led to extensive ash dispersal, which poses a danger to flights passing through the area. Last year's eruption was less intense and resulted in flight cancellations, so this time, cancellations are expected at Catania Airport as well.

No damage or casualties have been reported in this year's eruption.

An Israir flight bound for nearby Catania has already returned to Israel, with no further flights scheduled today. As of now, the flight planned for Wednesday, June 4, is expected to proceed as normal, but travelers are advised to follow the flight schedule and reports here at Passport News.

More details to follow.
