The aerial revolution is underway.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed a groundbreaking executive order yesterday (Friday, June 6) lifting the ban on commercial supersonic flights over U.S. soil, a ban imposed in 1973 due to concerns over sonic boom noise.
The order mandates the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to update regulations to permit supersonic flights only for aircraft meeting stringent environmental conditions, mainly noise reduction over populated areas, while preventing sonic booms from being heard on the ground. Additionally, the administration promoted the SAM Act, an initiative removing further barriers in the field.
The move is supported by innovative companies in the field, foremost among them Boom Supersonic, which successfully conducted a test earlier this year with the XB-1, the first privately-funded supersonic aircraft, which broke the sound barrier and is expected to serve civilian airlines in the future.
"On January 28, Geppetto broke the sound barrier, the first privately-developed supersonic aircraft. And today... Trump broke the sound barrier – for good!" stated Blake Scholl, CEO and founder of Boom Supersonic, adding, "In 1973, supersonic flight over the U.S. was banned. The intention was to protect the public, but in practice, innovation was banned, and progress in the field was stalled for half a century. Now we can celebrate, the supersonic race has started, and a new era of commercial aviation can begin.
Scholl concluded, "I thank President Trump, the U.S. Department of Transportation, lawmakers who led the SAM Act, and the FAA team for leading the next steps.
Make America Supersonic!"
Boom Supersonic has already reported orders received for the future aircraft from leading airlines including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines.
The executive order comes as part of a series of administration steps to promote technological innovation in aviation. The White House emphasized this as another step to maintain the U.S.'s position as a global leader in aviation and technology.
