The Northern European company has signed a historic agreement to purchase 45 E195-E2 aircraft manufactured by Embraer, with an option for an additional 10 in the future.
This is SAS's largest agreement for new aircraft purchases directly from the manufacturer in almost three decades.
Aircraft deliveries will begin towards the end of 2027 and will continue for about four years. The aircraft are intended to replace an aging fleet and to strengthen regional connectivity routes in Scandinavia and Europe, alongside increasing flight frequencies and providing greater operational flexibility.
SAS CEO, Anko van der Werff, stated: "This is a pivotal moment for SAS. We have carefully chosen the aircraft that suits us in terms of efficiency, performance, and comfort - and this investment reflects our confidence in the future."
The E195-E2 is an advanced and modern jet, 62% quieter than the previous generation and 29% more fuel-efficient. The aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney's new generation engines and is compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blends of up to 50% – with full certification for 100% SAF expected in the future.
According to Embraer, the aircraft offers enhanced passenger experience along with operational economic advantages.
Embraer President, Arjan Meijer, said: "This is a breakthrough. The new aircraft will form a central infrastructure for SAS's expansion - with unprecedented performance, quietness, and comfort."
The deal is supported by Skyworks Holdings and is expected to support the company's goals of sustainable growth, strengthening connections between regional and global cities, and improving passenger experience.
According to Cirium reports, SAS was recently ranked as the most punctual airline in the world for departures and arrivals - another achievement in its renewal process.
