Brisbane leads global security efforts. Brisbane Airport has successfully completed a security assessment under a new global program developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The IATA Safety Management Systems (SeMS) certification for Brisbane comes after a site visit to the airport in June, which included a thorough review of Brisbane Airport's approach to aviation security.

Brisbane Airport has reached a significant milestone by becoming the world's first airport to complete a comprehensive security assessment under IATA's Safety Management Systems (SeMS) program. This certification places Brisbane at the forefront of aviation security management and underscores its commitment to enhancing safety standards in the aviation industry.

IATA, representing over 350 airlines worldwide, developed the SeMS framework to help airports manage security risks through active management, industry best practices, and continuous improvement.

The assessment focused on six key areas critical to aviation security:

Operational Security - Integration of security by airport management in decision-making and its overall operational framework.

Resource Management - Efficient management of resources dedicated to security measures and risk management.

Threat and Risk Management – Evaluation and mitigation of potential security threats through strategic planning and implementation of measures.

Quality Assurance and Control – Implementing effective monitoring and feedback systems to maintain and enhance security standards.

Emergency and Incident Management – Planning and preparing for potential emergencies ensuring rapid and effective responses.

Security Documentation – Ensuring proper documentation of policies, procedures, and operations related to aviation security.

Achieving the highest level of certification highlights Brisbane Airport's leadership in airport security management. The airport was also praised for its efforts in fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, ensuring that different departments work cohesively to address security risks and incidents. Additionally, the airport's commitment to innovation was highlighted with continuous improvements in security procedures, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to risk management.

Brisbane Airport, ranked as Australia's third busiest airport, serves as a vital gateway for both domestic and international travelers. Handling approximately 24 million passengers annually, it is expected to play a crucial role during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With the growing demand for flights and the upcoming global sporting event, the airport's SeMS certification is seen as an essential step in maintaining the highest safety standards for all passengers.
