Wildfires in Greece's Ionian Islands: Forest fires are rapidly spreading across Greece's Ionian Islands, particularly in Kefalonia and Zakynthos. The Greek news agency warns of fast-spreading fires due to strong winds and extreme heat in the area.

Despite the expanding flames, there has been no official announcement regarding the evacuation of residents or tourists from their homes and accommodations. Notably, temperatures in Kefalonia are reaching up to 37°C, while in Zakynthos, highs are at 32°C.

According to the Greek Defense Ministry, activities that could ignite fires should be avoided, burning cigarettes should not be discarded, and litter that could fuel fires should not be left on site. It is advisable to have fire extinguishers available, even in accommodations. Additionally, it is recommended to equip with a hose.

If fire reaches your location, ensure your departure is completely safe before leaving, and if staying inside the building, close doors, block gaps with wet cloths to prevent smoke intrusion, remove curtains that might catch fire, fill bathtubs with water, and gather everyone in one place with you.

As a reminder, last summer saw particularly intense fires in Rhodes, leading to the cancellation of many tourist vacations and significant evacuation of residents. Following the event, Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis ordered benefits for vacationers affected.
