IBM's Vice President for Government and Regulatory Affairs joins the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Thomas Reynaert, previously the founder and CEO of A4E, the European aviation organization, from 2016 to 2023, brings extensive experience in aviation and aerospace, according to the organization's announcement.

It is likely that his experience in the high-tech sector as a senior executive at IBM significantly contributed to Reynaert's selection, given the future challenges facing the world's leading aviation body.

"It is crucial for governments to understand the value aviation creates and the challenges faced by airlines connecting people and economies. Thomas brings knowledge and experience that will help IATA enhance our effectiveness with governments and regulators," said Willie Walsh, CEO of IATA, adding: "While Thomas will be based in Brussels with an immediate focus on European Union affairs, he will lead IATA efforts globally, including in Washington and the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO."

Reynaert himself stated: "International airlines face many challenges. Safely transporting five billion people and 3.2% of global GDP annually is a modern miracle. While conducting this critical work, airlines contend with burdensome taxation and the obligation to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. I will work with governments worldwide for a more productive regulatory environment where airlines can effectively compete and grow while providing the global connectivity that makes our world a better place."
