The Rhodes Island Fire Protection Project was introduced last week at a special event at City Council Hall, as part of the Smart Cities Program. The project is funded by the Greek Reconstruction Fund, and, according to Deputy Mayor George Varley, it is a "critically valuable operational tool" that features roughly 100 sensors at each location where it is deployed.

The uniqueness of the system is the intersection of sensors and the reduction of false reports. In the event of a fire detection, coordinates are automatically sent to the city hall control room, which is also connected to the fire department. Ten fire engines were recently equipped with GPS for immediate guidance to the scene.

The new system is part of a comprehensive program aimed at preventing, surveilling, and responding to hazards in a timely manner.

As a reminder, Greece has experienced significant wildfires during the summer season in recent years. In the summer of 2023, particularly severe fires were recorded on the island of Rhodes, which led to the evacuation of tourists and resulted in compensation being granted to them in the form of an alternative vacation, as their original vacation was damaged by the fires.
