Passenger border crosssings, shut down. Following recent incidents at the land border between Lithuania and Belarus, which included temporary closures of the crossing for several hours, the Lithuanian government announced the complete closure of the border to passenger crossings from November 1 to November 30, 2025.

The decision includes the suspension of the crossing at the Šalčininkai checkpoint and restricted transit via the Medininkai border crossing. Travelers will only be allowed to cross provided they comply with specific exceptions, including:

  • Citizens of NATO countries (including the U.S.)
  • Lithuanian citizens and their family members returning to the country
  • Citizens of member states of the European Union, the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Ukraine
  • Persons with a valid residence permit or humanitarian visa in Lithuania

The U.S. government advises U.S. citizens not to travel to Belarus, as per the Department of State’s Level 4 travel advisory. At the same time, U.S. citizens in Belarus are advised to leave as soon as possible. They should also check for updates regarding border restrictions and closures by closely monitoring local media and reviewing their personal security plans.

American citizens are also advised to ensure their travel documents are up to date and easily accessible.
