No ETA, No Entry: UK Prepares to Enforce Travel Authorization from 2026

Starting February 25, 2026, anyone planning to visit the United Kingdom will need to obtain advance digital permission before they can travel.

The new rule applies to citizens from 85 countries, including European Union states and the three countries that currently do not require a visa (Canada, the United States, France). Without an approved Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or an eVisa, travelers will simply not be able to board flights to the UK.

The move is part of the UK government’s effort to modernize immigration controls and make the border experience more efficient. Airlines and other carriers will be checking ETA status before passengers even leave for the UK, so there’s no room for last-minute surprises.

Since its introduction in October 2023, over 13.3 million visitors have successfully applied for an ETA. The system has already made travel faster and smoother for many, including those connecting through UK airports and passing through passport control. The early rollout was designed to give travelers time to get used to the new process before enforcement begins. This phased approach mirrors similar programs in the United States and Canada.

Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp emphasized both the safety and convenience benefits. He said:

“ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and gives us a fuller picture of immigration.” He added, “ETAs are also better for travelers. Digitizing the immigration system ensures that the millions of people we welcome to the UK every year enjoy a more seamless travel experience.”

How to Apply and Who Is Exempt

Applying for an ETA is a fast and straightforward process, usually completed in a few minutes using the official UK ETA app. However, travelers are advised to allow up to three working days for the completion of a possible review that might be needed. The current cost is £16, keeping it accessible for most visitors.

It’s worth noting that British and Irish citizens, including those with dual nationality, do not need an ETA. Dual citizens are reminded to carry a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement to avoid any issues at the border.

All travelers planning to visit the UK next year should keep in mind that they should not leave home without their ETA, to avoid any problems and delays. Travelers who prepare in advance are expected to enjoy smoother and faster entry, while authorities gain better tools to protect the border and manage immigration efficiently.
