In preparation for an expected increase in tourist numbers, Greece has started renovation work at its island airports, including those managed by Fraport Greece. The airports are currently undergoing upgrades and renovations, and the list includes some airports that were not previously adapted to landing Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft, and were mostly focused on ATR aircraft. These will also undergo runway extensions and reinforcement.
Among the airports undergoing renovations during the winter season are Santorini, Kefalonia, Corfu, Samos, Zakynthos, Rhodes, Mykonos, and Mytilene (Lesvos).
Closing Dates and Times on the Main Islands
Rhodes Airport will be closed for 24 hours every Tuesday from 18:01 to Wednesday at 17:59, until December 17, 2025 and also from January 13 to March 18, 2026, just before the start of the new tourist season.
Santorini and Corfu airports will be closed from January 12 to January 19, 2026. Zakynthos Airport will be closed from February 2 to February 16, 2026. Mykonos Airport will close on December 17, 2025, December 30, as well as January 13 and March 18, 2026
Mytilene Airport (Lesvos) will be closed every Tuesday from midnight to Wednesday midnight until December 16, 2025, and from January 13 to March 24, 2026.
By the start of the tourist season in April 2026, Greek airports hope to complete preparations and renovations to open the renovated runways and terminals on time and to adapt them to larger aircraft types and accommodate more tourists, in accordance with forecasts of tourism growth in Greece for the coming years.
Meanwhile, intensive construction and upgrade work have also recently begun at Athens Airport, in order to meet the demand for holidays in Greece, especially during the tourist season. This is what the work at Athens Airport looked like this week.
